2005 Subaru legacy GT project update 1

8/12/24: bought 2005 legacy 2.5 GT from Facebook marketplace seller for $1500, tried to drive home. Head gasket seemed to leak compression into the cooling system and blew the rad. Oil light was fine most of the ride but became solid on when it blew the rad. Rattle was very loud all of the time, I am afraid it might have thrown the bearing completely. Could not test very much because the car was rattling so bad, but the car seems to have a low power issue. ended up towing car after rad went. Seller said car had 180k mi but it actually had ~119k mi.

8/13/24: when I checked the oil it was over full, which was odd because I thought I ran out on the trip home, when I tried starting the engine did not quiet down at idle like it did previously and rattled even louder. vacuumed out the inside and used the appropriate cleaners and treatments for the interior. no coolant but there seems to be some brown liquid remnants in the radiator and some grit in the radiator cap. Also cleaned outside of the vehicle with a pressure washer. Read codes with tool:

CONFIRMED

P0340- camshaft position sensor “A” circuit

P0700- transmission control system (MIL request)

P0725- engine speed input circuit possibly transmission related

P0817- starter disable circuit also transmission related

PENDING

P0021- "A" camshaft position - Timing over-advanced or performance

P0700- transmission control system (MIL request)

These codes point to a couple of things, the camshaft codes are most likely attributed to a stuck open vvt solenoid. The other codes are related to the transmission. will clear the codes before I pull the engine to fix the knock and the head gaskets and then fix the engine. Once the engine is in good running condition I can then better diagnose any other issues.
